Background: Students from CETC (Construction and Engineering Training Centre), Fareham, this week had the unique opportunity to visit a very local construction site where a new helicopter rescue training facility is being built. This visit was organised to provide the students with real-world insights into the construction and engineering processes involved in such a specialised project.

Objective: The primary goal of the visit was to enhance the students’ understanding of the practical applications of their coursework, particularly in the context of constructing a facility designed for helicopter rescue training. This aligns with CETC’s mission to provide hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for careers in construction and engineering.

Activities:

  1. Site Tour:
    • The visit began with a comprehensive tour of the construction site, led by the project manager Marten Platt with site manager Matt Napier. Students were introduced to the various stages of construction, from initial groundwork to the installation of specialised equipment.
    • Marten explained the unique challenges of building a facility designed for helicopter rescue training, including the need for robust structural integrity and advanced safety features.
  2. Interactive Sessions:
    • Students participated in interactive sessions where they could ask questions and engage with the construction team. Topics covered included project planning, materials selection, and the integration of technology in construction.
    • The construction team demonstrated some of the specialised equipment used in the project.

Outcomes:

  • Enhanced Practical Knowledge: The visit provided students with a deeper understanding of the construction processes and the specific requirements of building a helicopter rescue training facility.
  • Increased Engagement: The interactive and hands-on activities increased student engagement and interest in their coursework.
  • Career Inspiration: The experience inspired many students to consider careers in specialised construction fields, such as those involving safety and rescue operations.

Conclusion: The visit to Bristow Helicopter’s Search and Rescue Training Facility, work in progress, was a valuable educational experience for CETC students. It not only reinforced their classroom learning but also provided them with practical insights and inspiration for their future careers. This initiative highlights the importance of real-world experiences in vocational education and the benefits of industry partnerships in enhancing student learning.

This is one of many visits planned with students from CETC, which is just adjacent to our construction site.
